The button to turn the light "on" or "off" is in fact common in many cars, usually the light goes automatically off when you close the boot and the switch is in "on" position and the button's "off" position is useful for the dealers to prevent the battery to be depleted if the car boot remains open for long time to show the visitors the storage capacity.

Tip!If you intend to give a car a score,first do a comparison between like vehicle,which are of the same type.ie:-Convertible,Roadster,Coupe of the same year,in the same price point & finally but not lastly,base your opinion,unbias as possible based on its merits or demerits in relation to the specific models it directly competes against.Example to do a comparison between a MX5 RF of 2019 and directly compare it to say a 2019 Porch ,Farrari ,Viper or Mustang GT 350 is a waste of not just your time but everybodys.When you compare 32,000 dollar vehicles to vehicles at 2 to 4 times its price it defeats the purpose of a comparison in the first place.Doug you should be more realistic & not score your vehicle based on the Basis of the most sophisticated and advance wonders in the world.I could go on the net & compare a Bugatti Veyron @over 2 million dollars with over 1200 hp &16 cylinder dual turbos&0-60 in 2.4 seconds. the NC 3rd generation had a power retractable hardtop from 2006 to 2016 I believe .. my favorite one -- I like the targa RF one here but the car now looks short and stubby and is too busy with its angles in the front -- looks like an animae car.. most cars now have lost elegant simplicity and form ! Imagine the cost of fixing the retractable roof when it starts failing in a few years …Miata's are always just off .. this one almost got it right

My opinion on looks and power ... The previous generation Miatas had a lighthearted, cheerful, and playful design persona - and even more so in early years. Even though it could have used a bit more power then, its character was fitting for a basic four cylinder. As the years progressed, and styling evolved aggressively, it needed evolving power to match it's design language. The current generation as seen here is no longer a happy-go-lucky, cute little convertible. Its design language and persona is serious, assertive, and competitive, and thus It needs more power. A turbo four cylinder with 250-300 HP would be a perfect match. for example, the new Chevrolet Malibu with its 2.0 liter, turbo four cylinder puts out 250 HP, and is paired to a 9 speed automatic transmission. This car accelerates impressively quick, but is not crazy. It cruises at 70MPH at low RPM and is very, very quiet. Test drive one and you'll see what I'm referring to. The new Miata needs a powertrain like this.

If the MX-5 had a lot more power... it probably wouldn't be as fun. Fast != Fun in all cases and Mazda understands that. 5.8 seconds is like twice as fast as my old Acura CL now that is a slow car. If they ever make a higher powered version they should have a detune options "eco fun race" etc... so you get those fun revs and good low end torque while not feeling like you have to go easy on it (just go watch some Mustang / Corvette spinout videos etc..) I kind of expect that once the Skyactive-X is in the MX-5.

Regarding power - Mazda has a 2.5 litre engine in the Mazda3 - why the hell can't they just put in that engine in the Miata with it tuned for even more power - no need for a turbo or a v6 or anything and the weight difference would be almost nothing. Sales are down and would likely get a few more sales and beat the Fiat 124. I own an NB - second one - and there is nothing more fun but a little more power would be great.

Besides, don't you think Mazda would've already shoehorned it in there if it could be done? - "a 2.5 turbo would be amazing" A million-horsepower engine that weighs 10 pounds and gets a thousand miles/gallon would be amazing. Turbos are unreliable pieces of sh!t. Big kudos to Mazda for squeezing 181 horses out of the 2.0 NA engine. - "as long as it does not change the dynamics" A 2.5 M3 weighs 128 lbs. more than a comparable 2.0... Most of that is engine weight. You think putting that extra 128 lbs. in the MX5's nose wouldn't adversely affect its dynamics?

+em745a From what I see, the Miata uses the current generation Skyactive G engine - which comes in different displacements including 1.5 and 2.0 that have been used in the MX5 Miata. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyActiv#2.0_L The 2.5 litre engine in the Mazda3 is the same block - i do not see why it would not fit - any family of engines look the same from the outside and use similar components and accessories and the main difference is the bore and stroke... bore X stroke of 83.5 mm × 91.2 mm for the 2.0, 89.0 mm (3.50 in) bore and a 100.0 mm (3.94 in) stroke in the 2.5 - which presumably is the largest they can do with this block. The 2.5 has a turbo version - that might not fit - but a 2.5 turbo would be amazing. As for enough power - you can never have too much. I went from a 2000 NB to the 2002 with variable valce timing and it was an improvement - more would be even more fun as long as it does not change the dynamics. I drove a 2017 ND and it was faster than may car.

I would imagine that the hump in the passenger's footwell has to do with the exhaust.

The expectations that many people have for horsepower these days have moved into stupid territory, especially for a light weight car like this. I think Mazda got the specs of this car exactly right, especially with the optional LSD and Bilstein suspension. It's a very capable, fun to drive sports car that doesn't cost a fortune. It's perfect as it is...well, I wouldn't complain if they improved the infotainment system and made Android Auto standard, but otherwise it's a fantastic sports car for the price.

But It doesn't have an ash tray.At least they could have an ash tray & a beer fridge on its options list.But then again they do have both at Canadian Tire & Mazda Speed Aftermarket.

240 HP for the Miata would be dumb on the street! You wouldn't be able to ring it out between 3-4.

Dough a misstep on the new 2019 it doesn't have a glove box,the 2011 did & it locked.Mine has 4 cup holders too,but the center ones are concealed in the center console with a sliding door also mine the GT version has also 167 hp but torque is more linear applies faster at low end.The only feature mine lacks is the GPS navigation.Otherwise it is a far better car.Therefore I choose the 2011 over the 2019 hands down!!!Also mine has 4 Full size air vent not 3 + a little one.It also has a storage box on the center console behind the cup holders & it also locks.Doug,also on the plus side for the 2011.Both Drivers door & passenger door has map pockets not on the 2019.I have driven both the 2011 & 2019 extensively & testing of both the heating & air conditioning is definitely more powerful on the 2011 as opposed to the 2019 .The hard top retracts faster & does not interfere with the rear visibility as it does for me in the 2019.Some say the 2019 has better styling but that's a matter of opinion.They say that the 2019's retractable hardtop is less ungainly when it comes to the retractable roof.I say from a designers point of view it's larger yes but the stronger folding mechanics that I do admit adds a little weight to the top are also much more dependable.Mazda will come to realize this & hopefully retract the design nightmare in favor of the 3rd generation design.The frame rail support that runs across the rear hood frame is also a misstep,I feel.First it does block your rear visibility & takes away somewhat of the true open feeling of the cockpit.Maybe when style overtakes the reality of function someone,say as with my perspective should have been helping in the design of the 2018-19 concept of the RF.I have spoken to other like thinking individuals in the industry & I'm afraid most agree with these points of modification.But I'm just a retired Automotive affectionate of areodynamics with little sense of logical economics when it comes to restructuring & the RF design.Doug keep your positive attitude,for now a days it accounts for much.

Must I say first Dough that the light in the trunk that has a switch for a very good reason. First if the light didn't have one,which most now a day don't,when you open the trunk on other cars the light on other cars stays on & when you leave the trunk after removing your groceries or luggage,if you don't fully close the trunk lid on OTHER cars the light stays on.That's ok, if your coming back to the car soon but if you like me say leave it overnight or worse for a few days.Guess what your battery is dead.Also when you use the remote to open the door & say you accidentally press the trunk lid button & don't realize you did,again your battery is dead.I have an 2011 MX5GT but use to have a Genesis Coupe.And I can tell you that over the time I had that car,I left the trunk light on several times.Each time I did I had a dead battery!!You have to look at the reasoning why Mazda did that.Back in 84 When I had a Mazda RX7GSLSE it had the same on off trunk switch.This feature should be on all cars!!Sometimes Old school can me new school.A case in point.Maybe if some of these sophisticated new cars with their advanced tech would incorporate some tried & true mechanics better more sophisticated developments would happen!

The 'giant hump on the passenger side footwell' is actually too near the seat to be a problem... and in any case in my Right Hand Drive MX-5 is on the driver's side... I don't know what's under it though.

Nice looking car, I like it! Love the hardtop convertible, I had a '92 Toyota MR2 turbo once and loved the t-tops...that car was a blast and I wish they still made them small, fast, and fun like that
